Thank you for inquiring about a permit to replace window frames or doors.  The window frame or door placement permit fee is $20.00 and allows you to replace window frames or exterior doors without submitting design details if, and only if, ALL of the following conditions are met.  Our Fence Permit is viewable and printable so you can print it out, fill it in and return it to the City. 

1. The structure is a residence or storage space.
2. The windows and/or doors are not wider than the existing opening (opening can be lowered for bedroom egress requirements with this permit).
3. The replacement windows or doors are new based on heat source.
4. If you home is heated with an electric furnace, the windows shall be at least U.35 and the door at least U.20.
5. If your home is heated with gas, oil or heat pump, the window shall be at least U.65 and the doors at least U.40
6. The new frames will be sealed with caulking and/or the cracks packed with insulation.
7. All new windows in bedrooms must open for emergency exiting.  The window must not exceed 44 inches above the floor to windowsill.  All replaced bedroom windows must be at least 4 ft. x 4 ft. and slide open on one side.   
8. Every bedroom, main hallway and the room with the highest ceiling must have a smoke alarm installed per manufacturer’s instructions in conjunction with the window or door replacement.
9. The windows or doors are being replaced under the supervision of the property owner (not contracted).
10. Exterior doors shall not use a key to unlock the door to exit the building.
11. Address numbers must be visible when looking at the front door from the curb.

If your project does not comply with ALL of the above conditions, the project may still be possible, but you may need to apply for a building permit, which requires more detailed information and is more expensive.  Please submit the site plan and/or design drawings/building permit application for review and approval by the plans examiner.
